The idea of leaving a legacy is the need or the desire to be remembered for what you have contributed to the world. In some cases, that contribution can be so special that the universe is unalterably changed. Imagine that you left a legacy to some random people.
They can spend it for some non-noble purposes and it is as if you worked hard all your life and did not leave a significant trace on the Earth.
